News from Ukraine

April 10, 2008

Most people don’t recognize the great significance Kiev and Ukraine have in European history and the future of the world.  Maybe that’s one reason why there’s a constant struggle with corruption, sickness, and suffering. I think this is why people from all over Ukraine and other countries continue coming to Kiev looking for hope and a brighter future.

In the last 5 years Kiev’s population has more than doubled jumping from nearly 3 million to an estimated more than 7 million. This includes all the people living in Kiev who are not registered to live here. Each person is supposed to register with the government in order to live in Kiev or whatever city they live in.

Believe it or not – Kiev is the 10th most expensive city in the world to live in! Inflation has been increasing weekly even though steps have been taken by Tymoshenko, the prime minister, to reduce debt, and return monies that were taken when the Soviet Union collapsed.

Ukraine is becoming increasingly significant as it seeks to move more westward. Today parliament voted to ratify the decision to join the WTO. Now Ukraine needs to adopt about 60 new laws. Ukraine officially becomes a member 30 days from today. Hopefully, Ukraine’s MAP from NATO will be reconsidered in December. In the meantime, struggles continue in city and national politics. We need corruption to be cleaned up and government to function for the welfare of the people and not for personal agendas or personal gain.

Why is all this important enough to blog about? Because the children are the future of Ukraine – and everywhere else I might add. If we don’t stand up for what is right and pray for changes in the political system, society and family values, then who will? And who will teach the children to pay attention to what is going on in the world around them? It’s up to us – you and me!

(I’m Jane and I approved this post – just couldn’t help adding that little bit of humor)
