Update from Ukraine…

March 21, 2014

While the whole world has their eyes on Ukraine, and rightly so. Only God knows what the future for this country holds. Nevertheless, we know His promises are true. He has promised us a hope and a future.

With our children we are praying even more often for the country and for its leadership. We are singing over the country blessings. We’re calling out to the Lord in prayer and song for Jesus to bless this nation. Recently one of our favorite songs to sing with the children is based on Isaiah 43. “Fear not! For I have  redeemed you and called you by name, you are mine.”

This week there was a coalition meeting of organizations working with at risk children. The main speaker was the head of the organization “Ukraine Without Orphans”. He spoke about an initiative to organize a national headquarters for the protection of orphans. In light of the potential of war in Ukraine, we are making plans for how to protect the most vulnerable. In Crimea there are 3600 orphans in 22 State orphanages. There are first-hand accounts that Russian soldiers have already occupied and are using orphanages for storing weapons and food supplies along with housing soldiers there. This is so dangerous if war breaks out. Children could be used as human shields and the close proximity of having soldiers far from home living next to young girls is unacceptable.

A database is being gathered from churches, organizations, children’s camps, etc. in case war breaks out. Families that would be willing to take in a child or children would go through a short training preparing them. If this becomes a reality we are willing also to take in about 200 children and then distribute them to families. It’s hard to think in those type of terms, but we all know that it’s better to be over prepared than to be caught off-guard.

What can you do? Keep praying!!! Also, they are asking for international churches and children’s camps who are willing to receive child refugees to be also added to the database.

The initiative has the approval of the government. After the meeting the representative of Ukraine Without Orphans had a meeting with the interim president Turchynov. We are all hoping and praying that this will not be necessary to implement.

Please continue to pray. If one doesn’t read the news on the internet, life seems to be fairly “normal” here. We are praying God will use this for His good and raise up more families to take in orphans even if there isn’t a war. They need to be in loving Christian families.

Things at the Ark remain normal even with all the chaos going on all around us. We have had 2 children placed in foster families and recently taken in 2 new boys ages 7 and 9 years old.

The effect of all the political uprising has had a direct impact on the cost of food products. Prices have increased since December and show no sign of slowing down yet.

Thank you for the update, so heartbreaking for Crimea kids yet hard to think it could happen every where. We are praying still!
